The water embodied in agricultural exports. Joins CWASI unit water footprints (m³ per ton) to BACI export tonnage, weighted by FAO/AQUASTAT water stress of the exporter.
Source: CWASI database (Tamea, Tuninetti, Soligno & Laio 2021), unit water footprint of production, m³/ton, served via the authors’ open watertofood.org API (CC BY 4.0); bulk Zenodo 10.5281/zenodo.4606794 | FAO/AQUASTAT SDG 6.4.2 Level of water stress, FAOSTAT SDG Indicators bulk, 2000-2023 (CC BY 4.0) | BACI 202501 (CEPII), HS92 export/import quantities in metric tons, 1995-2024 (retrieved 2026-04-28)
Methodology: Virtual water exported (m³) = sum over mapped primary crops of [ CWASI unit water footprint of production uWFp (m³/ton) for the exporter x BACI export quantity (metric tons) ]. Scarcity-weighted export = virtual water exported x exporter AQUASTAT water-stress fraction (SDG 6.4.2 / 100). Imports use the importer’s own footprint as a proxy because BACI is exporter-reported with no partner dimension; exports (using the producer’s real footprint) are the primary metric and net balance is indicative. The open CWASI API provides only the TOTAL unit water footprint, so green and blue water are not split here (the blue-water-only figure requires the restricted CWASI bulk file). CWASI ends 2016; trade years after 2016 reuse the 2016 footprint. The FAO-item-to-HS6 concordance is a curated primary-crop subset (cereals, oilseeds, coffee, cocoa, tea, pulses, key fruits and vegetables, cotton lint, natural rubber); processed and derived products are excluded, so totals are a lower bound on agricultural virtual-water trade.
